Philadelphia protests for George Floyd and racial justice

The murder of George Floyd was the spark. The video of the incident ignited the passion. Then the protests erupted.

George Floyd died on May 25, 2020, after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes. Demonstrations in Minneapolis began the next day, but the protests demanding for police reform and racial justice spread like wildfire in cities across the United States.

It began in Philadelphia on May 30, where a crowd of one hundred turned into thousands within two hours. That crowd came back, day after day, often with new leaders directing the protests. For nine consecutive days, local residents marched through the streets and community activists delivered empowering speeches, appealing for accountability, equity, and change.

This is what the Philadelphia George Floyd protests looked like.
